Antwerp dredging work 'will have effect by end of 2010'

Companies interested in the hiring of dredge pumps have been told that dredging work currently taking place on the River Scheldt is set to have a positive effect by the end of the year.

The aim of the dredging is to improve access to the port of Antwerp for larger vessels, as well as expanding tide windows, reports Dredging Today.

According to the news provider: "The work should be sufficiently advanced for the intended results in terms of navigation windows to be achieved by the end of 2010."

Work began on the deepening process last month following a ceremony conducted by Dutch and Flemish officials.

Last month also saw dredge pump hire agreed for sludge and dredging processes to take place on the shipping channel later in the year.

Dredge pumps will be delivered to the site in time for that work to start in September, reported Dredging News Online.
