Flood management project for Peak District moors

The largest ever conservation project in the UK will contain a flood management scheme to prevent problems on the moors in the Peak District and South Pennines.

More than eight square kilometres of land will be stabilised by repairing areas where peat has eroded, as this provides a safeguard against flash flooding.

Poul Christensen, chair of Natural England, announced the 5.5 million MoorLIFE project and stated it will take five years to complete.

Mr Christensen said: "Peatlands are a vital buffer against climate change they have a major role to play in alleviating flood risk."

Plant life will be reintroduced to the area to help create a "blanket bog" which will improve the moors and slow the flow of rainwater into urban areas.

The Daily Post recently reported that Denbigh Council in Wales plans to carry out tunnelling work as part of a flood management project to protect properties in the area.ADNFCR-3039-ID-19907729-ADNFCR
