Giant chainsaw-like machinery to be used in flood management project

A new piece of flood management equipment imported from Europe is planned to be used in the UK.

The Environment Agency explained how the giant chainsaw-like piece of machinery has been brought over from the continent where it has been used on projects in France and Poland.

It will be used to help bolster flood defences in Nottingham as part of the 51 million Left Bank Flood Alleviation Scheme that is underway in the region.

The Trenchmix machine will be deployed to stop water seeping beneath flood barriers at the Attenborough Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), where the ground is highly permeable meaning water could easily breach the defences.

Innes Thomson, area flood risk manager, said: "Trenchmix offers significant benefits. It is faster than conventional sheet piling machines, and its lower noise and vibration levels will reduce disturbance to wildlife, visitors and local residents."

BBC Devon recently reported how Exeter's flood management system is to be transformed in order to prevent the River Exe causing damage to the surrounding area.ADNFCR-3039-ID-19910487-ADNFCR
