Cambridgeshire flood management scheme completed ahead of schedule Flood management

works designed to protect properties in Cambridgeshire have been completed.

The Environment Agency announced that after two years the project, which involved installing flood defences to protect 11,700 homes, has finished a month ahead of target.

Wisbech flood management scheme required steel piles to be fitted to the banks of the Nene and then clad in concrete and bricks.

Andrew Usborne, project manager for the Environment Agency, said the project has safeguarded the town against the "increased risk of flooding that climate change will bring.

Large sections of the city were shut while renovations were carried out on the North and South Brink and some areas will remain temporarily closed while the final stages of the scheme are finished.

This involves the installation of a new floodgate to the Port, which is expected to be completed by the end of August 2010.

Elsewhere, the agency has encouraged the residents of King's Lynn to discuss with the organisation ways in which they can protect their homes and businesses from flooding.ADNFCR-3039-ID-19912363-ADNFCR
